“Put another nickel in,

in the nickelodeon,

all I want is having you

and music, music, music”

I may have dated myself since I remember that song.  It came out in 1950 so it actually is before my time, but music has always been a part of my life. I can’t carry a tune in a bucket or play an instrument but still enjoy all genres of music.

Salina Public Library carried LPs and audio cassettes at one time for patrons to check out. With technology ever changing, the library continues to provide newer formats. The library is your go-to place for music — from Aaron Copeland to ZZTop, you can find it here.

If you want to read about your favorite artist or type of music, there are books on music and musicians of every genre. The call numbers for music start at 780 and go through 789.99. They also include sheet music, books on various instruments and how to play them.

The music CD collection numbers over 9,000 and is filed by call number, just like the books. New artists, old standards, country, rock, rap, religious, show tunes, jazz – there’s something for everyone. You can check six CDs and enjoy them for four weeks.

Or sign up for Hoopla and try out the newest releases. They load onto your computer or other electronic device and check out for seven days. Think you might want to get the latest George Strait CD? Give it a listen through Hoopla and then decide if you want to add it to your collection. A vast musical library at your fingertips.

If you’d rather watch than just listen, browse the nonfiction DVDs in the 780-789 range. Eagles Farewell 1 Tour DVD coverYou can take in concerts, Broadway shows, learn all about jazz in the series by Ken Burns or how to play the uke or guitar from one of the instructional DVDs. Elvis is still in the building — we have his Comeback Special from 1966! The Boss, the Beatles, MoTown, Snoop Dog, the Who, Queen — their concerts are waiting for you. My favorite is the Eagles Farewell I tour from Melbourne. All their songs and I control the volume so no ear plugs are needed. Well….maybe.

Should this plethora of tunes make you yearn to hear live music, we’ve got you covered in that department as well. Take a look at the Cultural Passes in Adult Circ. They are designed to give our patrons the opportunity to enjoy performances at the Stiefel and the Salina Community Theater. If you’ve never experienced the Salina Symphony or a musical at SCT, you owe it to yourself to take advantage of this unique library offering. The talent in this town will knock your socks off!

So before you spend another nickel on another CD – check out what the library has to offer.
