Hello, friends!
I have missed you so much! Have you been having a good summer? Did you go on an adventure while I was gone? I hope you had lots of fun if you did. Summer is a great time to visit new places and learn new things. Even if you don’t get to go very far you can always learn and find new things. Sometimes those things can be right in your backyard!
We found something in our backyard that I had never seen before. There were little caterpillars on one of Mama’s plants. She told me they were going to turn into Black Swallowtail butterflies. I didn’t know butterflies started out as little crawling things, I just thought they always had wings. Did you know about this?
I had to know how they did that! So Mama got me a book from the library and we also talked to my Aunt Jo. She knows so much about butterflies. Her whole yard is one big butterfly garden. She makes sure they have all the plants that they like and tries to keep them safe.
They told me that caterpillars will keep eating until they get bigger…
And bigger…
Then when they are ready, they make themselves a chrysalis. Inside the chrysalis is where they change into a butterfly. This is called metamorphosis. That’s such a big word!
When they are all done changing they come out of the chrysalis as beautiful butterflies! Isn’t that amazing?
There are a lot of different types of butterflies in the world. I can’t wait to learn more about them. I am going to go check on our caterpillars again. See you later!
P.S. You can always learn more about the different kinds of butterflies at the library.
