July 23, 2019 – Longtime Kansan, Sherri Shippy, will display her work in Salina Public Library’s Gallery 708 through Aug. 23. A reception for the artist will be from 4-5:30 p.m. Aug. 2, in conjunction with First Friday Night Live.

The exhibit, “Intricate Chaos,” will include Shippy’s Zentangle-style drawings and watercolor paintings inspired by spontaneous movement. The artist explores single objects inspired by nature using ink, watercolor and colored pencils. 

Shippy was encouraged to draw at an early age by her parents which helped to form the foundation of her love for art. Educated as a graphic artist, her interests are in drawing and painting. Some of her inspirations come from her favorite painting “Sunday afternoon on the Island Grande Jatte” by pointillist Georges Seurat and her love of nature and animals.

“My ideas occur when I let the spontaneous movement of the paint create the basis of my collective works,” Shippy said. “A combination of watercolor and ink are used to create layered textural marks in combination with the intricate movement of ink using the Zentangle method. I enjoy painting nature and finding beauty in each individual piece. I believe there are no mistakes and instead, I use the imperfections to redirect them into something out of the ordinary.” 

The public is welcome to view the exhibit during library hours — 9 a.m.-9 p.m. Monday-Thursday, 9 a.m.-6 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and 1-6 p.m. Sunday.
